The car is a 1998 golf gti vr6

If I shift from second to third when the rpms are over around 5k, it grinds going into third

If the rpms are low, it goes in smoothly

the other gears go in easy and downshifting from 4th to 3rd is not an issue

Any ideas?

My personal guess is a syncro on its way out

I don't think it's the shift linkages because 4th is right across from 3rd and has no issues
